London Mayoral Elections 2024: Strengthening London’s commitment to Vision Zero.

6th February 2024

As part of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, London adopted a Vision Zero approach to reducing road danger in 2018 with the Vision Zero Action Plan and the subsequent 2021 Progress Report. Since that time the city has made good progress in reducing road casualties towards the Vision Zero goal of no serious or fatal road casualties on London’s roads by 2041.

As of 2022 there has been a 38% decline in serious and fatal casualties (from the 2005-09 baseline) but only reductions in casualties amongst car occupants have achieved the target that had been set for 2022 of a 65% decline.

There is then still much work to do with London typically seeing 100 people killed and 3,500 seriously injured on its roads every year. In the run up to London’s Mayoral and Assembly elections on 2nd May 2024, we have put together a set of asks that, if adopted by the future Mayor, can help get London back on track to meet its long-term target.

Our asks focus on the safe system approach PLUS a key element for road danger reduction – reducing traffic levels. There are sections on reducing speeds, enforcement and the role that the Metropolitan Police play, reducing traffic, making vehicles safer especially for those walking and cycling, creating safe streets and how to learn better from collisions that occur and how to improve the justice system.

Our key asks are summarised below:

We hope that this will be of interest to Mayoral and Assembly member candidates alike and look forward to seeing these ideas adopted as part of the next administration.
